Mercury in Skin Care Products

We often hear that KKM announces some cosmetic products in the market contain scheduled poison; mercury, hydroquinone and tretinoin and bans them from being sold. But still, some people would just not care and still buy those products which make the sellers and the founders dare to sell their banned products to public.

This time, we are going to talk about mercury & hydroquinone. I bet all of us know that there are certain products that may contain these harmful ingredients but are still available in the Malaysian market. Plus, these products are also advertised via radio / tv every single day.

Despite of all this info/ awareness created by KKM, why are they still buying it?

First of all, we have to know that most of us are really concern to have fair, pinkish, flawless skin. But what do these “poison” do?

In a statement, the FDA says, “The products are usually marketed as skin lighteners and anti-aging treatments that remove age spots, freckles, blemishes, and wrinkles. Adolescents may use these products as acne treatments.”

As additional, it will take less time to get all of these “benefits”. Sounds hard to believe but it’s true. Despite of the benefits, it brings danger along for long term effect.

The danger is that you'll absorb mercury through your skin, and what accumulates can take decades to get rid of. That can trigger heart and neurological problems. If you're nursing and use these products, you can pass mercury through your breastmilk. The mercury can quickly damage a baby's developing brain and nervous system. These skin products also produce mercury vapors, or you may leave residue on a towel and can make family members ill, too.

Now you know the use of mercury in skincare/cosmetic products and the consequences of using it. It’s on you now to care or ignore. For more info on the products, you can check in this link.
